Frequently Asked Questions
What Kind of DNA Testing Should I Do?
We require you to first test through Ancestry DNA. Ancestry has the largest DNA database, which means a better chance for you to find close family matches. If your budget allows, we also suggest testing with 23andMe to increase your reach. Being in multiple databases is key, as we never know where your closest relative may have tested. If you administer your own test, you will be asked to share your Ancestry DNA results with us as a collaborator. You will then be asked to upload your DNA results for free to GedMatch.com, FamilyTreeDNA.com and MyHeritage.com which will compare your results to testers from those companies to give us a broader database to work with.
Are Results Guaranteed?
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that we will find your immediate biological family. The success of the search depends on many factors that are not in our control, such as how close your matches are, ease of building the family trees of matches, and if you come from an endogamous population. The databases are growing rapidly and new people test every day. There is a chance that while you may not have the needed matches today, you will eventually get closer matches over time. NEVER giveup! We have successfully found biological parents for over 265+ searchers and we canprovide references from previous clients upon request.
How Long Does It Take?
The length of the search depends on how close your DNA matches are, if they have family trees, the accessibility of genealogical records, and the ability to find living people. Another factor that can affect your search is if you come from an endogamous group that has a history of intermarriage. Any non-identifying information from your adoption agency or state records can also greatly improve the chances of a successful search. In most cases, searches are resolved within a few months.
What Does It Cost?
We offer a complimentary consultation to review your current DNA matches and determine if we’re the right fit for your search. If we believe we’re unable to assist, we’ll let you know upfront. Our standard fee is $1,500 per birth parent, which includes up to 20 hours of dedicated research. In many cases, once one biological parent is identified, they may provide the name of the other, allowing us to share that information with you at no additional cost.
